EUGENE – Former University of Oregon quarterback Chris Miller was honored with the Leo Harris Award as the Ducks’ top alumni letterman as part of the school’s homecoming activities prior to the start of Saturday’s football game against Washington State. The award, which is named after the school’s first Director of Athletics Leo Harris (1948-67), is given annually to a Ducks’ former athlete who has excelled in achievement and community service with a minimum of 20 years since leaving the university. A leisure studies major who attended the University of Oregon from 1983-87, the Pacific-10 Conference’s two-time first-team all-league standout became the conference’s first quarterback in 16 years to earn that distinction in consecutive seasons. Miller started 34 games over four-seasons and departed holding shares of no fewer than 13 Oregon school records, while his 42 touchdown passes ranked seventh in league history upon the completion of his collegiate career. Voted team MVP in 1986, he embarked on a 10-year NFL career in 1987 when he was selected by the Atlanta Falcons as the 13th overall pick in the NFL Draft. Accumulating 19,320 yards passing and 123 touchdowns with three different NFL teams, he led Atlanta to the playoffs in 1991 and was a Pro Bowl selection that same year after throwing for 3,103 yards and 26 TDs during the regular season. The former Shelton High School standout was inducted into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame in Portland in 2005. He has been involved in youth and high school coaching for 15 years, including a five-year tenure (2002-06) as head football coach at South Eugene High School. During his stint, he guided the Axemen to a 31-21 record and state playoff appearances in each of his last four seasons. He has served as executive director of Kidsports since the sprIng of 2006. In addition, he has sat on the McKenzie-Willamette Hospital board and is a member of the University or Oregon Founder’s Society and the Eugene Rotary.
