How do the Ducks do after a bye? In the 13 years of Head Coach Mike Bellotti’s tenure at Oregon, the Ducks have played 14 games after having a week off. At home, the record is 7-1, on the road, 6-0. (See Graph 1.) But what about the week after? Do the apparent advantages of a week off extend to the following week also? The archives tell us that two weeks after a bye, the Ducks are 3-0 at home and 4-4 on the road. (See Graph 2.) Digging deeper we find that, if that Week 2 game followed a win at home, the Ducks are 1-0 at home and 3-1 on the road. (See Graph 3.) We’ll talk about the exception later.
The last of these scenarios fits this week’s situation: (1) after a bye, Oregon thrashed WSU, 53-7, at home, (2) the Ducks are going on the road to play Washington. All this history and the fact that the Ducks are favored point to an Oregon victory. However, consider that, after coming off a bye in 2003, the Ducks had beaten Stanford at home, 35-0, then went on the road. They lost, 42-10. To Washington! Hmmmmm.
