The Ducks have done a bit better offensively against common opponents with Arizona State. This week the Oregon Ducks at 7-1 find themselves on a collision course with undefeated Arizona State. After the fireworks are over at Autzen Stadium, the winner will have the inside track to the Pac-10 championship, and, dare we say, a shot at the national title. Over halfway through the conference schedule Oregon and ASU have played four common opponents. The Ducks cruised by Stanford, Washington State and Washington by an average score of 54-36, but lost to California, 31-24. The Sun Devils beat the same four teams by an average score of 35-16. This graph shows that the Duck offense was more prolific (in yardage gained) than ASU in every case. In fact Oregon averaged 575 yards against the Cardinal, Cougars, Huskies and Bears, while the Sun Devils averaged 406. Although offense is only half the story, and the two offenses now have to face each other’s defense, the Ducks are clearly more adept at moving the ball. How this all translates into scoring points will go a long way into deciding the winner on Saturday.
