Oregon + BCS Formula + Luck = No National Championship Game. Maybe. There is reason for the Pac-10 (and Duck football fans in particular) to doubt the integrity of the BCS.
This graph clearly shows that both the Harris Interactive and USA Today Coaches’ Polls are weighted to favor teams and conferences in the Central and Eastern Time zones..
And since these two polls comprise two-thirds of the BCS formula for determining the match-up for the national championship, it’s easy to see why Oregon will have a lot to overcome in order to reach New Orleans on January 7th. The Harris voters are a motley crew of retired players, coaches, administrators and media types. USA Today has picked a “fair” selection of coaches from each conference. In the end they all will be swayed by regional and conference loyalties that are reinforced by the games that they actually saw (and didn’t see). Anyone who thinks they are going to be objective is either naive or stupid. Even if Oregon coach Mike Bellotti were able to persuade his brethren from the Pac-10, WAC and Mountain West to block vote for the Ducks, they still could not overcome the 79 percent of the coaches who represent the Big 12, Big 10, Big East, ACC, SEC, MAC, Conference-USA and Sun Belt, all of whom reside east of Denver. The daytime TV exposure of last week’s Oregon-Arizona State game via ESPN got some attention back East, but don’t count on many of those clowns to stay awake for Oregon’s visit to Tucson on Thursday night, November 15th. After all, when the helmets go on at 7 PM in Arizona, the pajamas are already on in New York, Michigan and Virginia. In order for the Ducks to have a clear shot at the title: Oregon has to run the table with no close calls, AND either Ohio State or LSU must lose a game, ANDKansas, Oklahoma and Missouri must each lose a game. Otherwise, the Ducks could have their bills pressed up against the window on Jan. 7th, watching two other teams play for the National Title.“East Coast Bias” is alive and well. Just remember that the people that came up with the BCS designed it that way. The nefarious and mysterious computers provide the remaining third of the BCS formula, but that is whole other discussion.
